We’ve all seen paving work being done, whether in traffic waiting for the flag person to let us through, or in parking lots and driveways in our towns and neighborhoods. There are a lot of different pieces of equipment that go into making sure these jobs are done safely and efficiently. In this ongoing series, we’ll be talking to you about the different types of equipment that we use here at Von Paving. This month; Pavers.
At the centre of any paving job, is the paver itself. Usually the most imposing piece of machinery, it is central to what we do as asphalt installers. Without these amazing pieces of machinery, we’d be lost.
So, how does a paver work? The asphalt is added from a dump truck into the paver’s hopper. Inside, a conveyor then carries the asphalt from the hopper to the auger. The auger places a stockpile of material in front of the screed. The screed takes the stockpile of material, flatten it and spreads it over the width of the road and provides initial compaction. From there, a smooth uniform surface is laid down behind the screed prime for steamrollers to flatten it out for usage.
