When it comes to winter driveway safety, ice is your number one enemy. There are ways to get rid of it and keep your and your family safe, but what is the best way? A lot of folks default to rock salt to deice their driveways. It’s inexpensive and readily available and melts ice quickly. That being said, there is more to consider when choosing deicing options.
Rock salt will melt the ice on your driveway easily and quickly, and inexpensively, but it does have a few side effects. Rock salt can be dangerous to plants and animals, so be wary of where you use it. Keep it away from your lawn, or any other vegetation, and don’t use it anywhere near where the family pet might be.
Ice melts are products that work similarly to rock salt, but due to their makeup, can sometimes work in colder temperatures than rock salt. YOu can also find ice melts that are more environmentally friendly, safe for use where children play, or safe for pets, and you can also find some that do all three.
There is no wrong answer when it comes to how you keep your driveway ice free. Look at the options, consider your life, and decide based on those factors!
