The winter months can and will take a toll on your paved driveway. The snow, rain, hail, and the cold temperatures can all wreak havoc on the asphalt and can cause cracks, and potholes. What can you do to minimize the damage? We’ve gathered some of our favourite tips for you to keep your driveway looking great!
Preventative maintenance is always your best option. Cold weather and freezing temperatures can cause cracks in your asphalt and can worsen current cracks. To start, here’s what we suggest.
- Fill any cracks in your driveway. If water can’t enter, it can’t make the cracks worse, or cause new cracks.
- Seal the driveway. A seal over the asphalt will help keep water out, thus protecting your driveway from cracks and potholes.
- Buy a snow shovel with a rubber edge as opposed to a metal edge. Metal snow shovels can damage the asphalt, which can lead to cracks.
The choice to use a snowblower or to shovel your driveway is 100% yours. What we do recommend is that if you clean right down to the asphalt, inspect it and make sure there is no new damage. If there is, take care of it immediately to avoid any future trouble.
If your driveway is on a slant, or you need some extra traction, applying sand can do the trick!
